For nearly a quarter of a century, the Festival of New Dance has been attracting audiences from all over Newfoundland to St. John’s for a expo of many styles of dance. For a city and province that can sometimes be described as “starved” for a variety of entertainment, The Festival of New Dance’s is bringing together a diverse repertoire of acts.
On Tuesday, September 9th, 2014, the Halifax Municipal Council passed a motion by Waye Mason to take The Khyber off the “surplus status” death-list. After weeks of rallying and campaigning for support, it seems the people’s voices and hard work of the Khyber Arts Society (KAS) spirited a huge win for the Khyber Arts Society.
Then the day came while slacking off from my door-to-door sales job that I sat near a toxic beach in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia and began texting Kieran (back in St. John’s) about starting some sort of arts and culture project. Little did I know that these messages would soon develop into something quite tangible.
At 10:00PM on Thursday, August 14th, 2014, Bar None [164 Water Street, St. John’s, NL] plays host to the opening night of the Shed Island festival, and the first of three jam-packed days of music. For those without a festival pass, a measly ten dollars for the night guarantees a musical bang for your buck.
In 2008 Aaron Powell released his first album there’s a spirit there’s a soul by himself in his Glovertown bedroom. The solo-experiment, which is now called Fog Lake, is an evolving and intriguing lo-fi pop project and band now based in St. John’s, Newfoundland.
