Mantra Doom Duo ZAUM Bring “The Ritual Experience” Back to the Maritimes

Despite ECMA nominations and Music NB awards, New Brunswick’s mantra doom duo ZAUM have recently spent more time touring Europe and promoting their work on the Swedish label I HATE Records than they have playing in the Maritimes.

“It will actually have been 1.5 years since we last played a show in the Maritimes, which is of course where we call home” writes Kyle Alexander McDonald, the one half of ZAUM credited as providing “bass/vocal/synth/textures”.

ZAUM, comprised of McDonald and Christopher Lewis (drums/percussion), have played 200+ shows over the last three years. Many of these gigs were international, and some were in support of such influential acts as Voivod, Pentagram, and Cauldron.

Since October 2016, ZAUM’s focus has been promoting the release of their ambitious 2 song, 42 minute psychedelic masterpiece titled Eidolon.

After much patience and persistence from ZAUM’s homeland supporters, the duo have decided to break their Maritimes hiatus with a special string of performances across Canada’s east coast this December.

“We thought it would be fitting to roll out some special shows and have a few of the guests who played additional instrumentation on our latest album (Eidolon) to actually perform it” McDonald explains.

ZAUM: The Ritual Experience is a 4 show run that melds the duo’s signature meditative bass and drum arrangement with additional atmospheric layers by Olive Bestvater of Saskatoon’s doomgaze outfit Black Tremor, as well as Moncton’s “woodwind scholar” Ricky Frenette.

The Ritual Experience is topped off with the work of experimental projectionist Jamie McEwan, as well as perfomance by Nawal Doucette, an award winning contemporary Middle Eastern dance artist who performs finger cymbals (zils) and specializes in Salimpour belly dance.
