R.I.P. Rocky Johnson

Did you know The Rock’s father was a Amherst-born Nova Scotian who broke down racial barriers in the world of wrestling?

Sadly, the legendary Rocky Johnson passed away today at the age of 75.

While Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has become the most successful wrestler to ever cross over into Hollywood, his father leaves a larger-than-life legacy of his own.

From his early days as a young Canadian boxer who sparred with the likes of Muhammad Ali in the 1960s, Rocky Johnson soon found his calling with an extremely successful wrestling career that spanned 27 years.

In 1983, Rocky Johnson joined with Tony Atlas under the name of Soul Patrol and together they became the first black duo to ever hold the WWF World Tag Team Championship.

“His combination of fire and agility, along with an impressive physique made him a headliner”, wrote pro wrestling journalist and historian, Dave Meltzer.

We highly recommend you check out Dave Meltzer’s in-depth memoriam of Rocky Johnson’s career.
