Premiere: Stream Andrew Smith’s Away Game EP
Away Game is the debut EP from Newfoundland & Labrador singer/songwriter Andrew Smith. Accompanied by prolific St. John’s local musicians such as Liam Ryan, Jack Etchegary, Liam Wight, Lucas Rose and Jacob Cherwick, Away Game features four tracks of what Smith describes as “country music mixed with occasional fuzz, fuzz mixed with occasional folk”. The songs revel in expressive storytelling laid out over a crisp and twangy musical bed that harkens back to Smith’s proclaimed alt country and folk rock influences including Old 97s, Uncle Tupelo, Lucinda Williams and Big Star. Lyrically, Smith cites literary influences such as the work of Alexander Pope, as well as his experience of growing up in rural Newfoundland.
