Found Photo: The Escape Hatch (St. John’s, 1984)

The Escape Hatch, 1984, Memorial University Streetscapes

Ye Olde Porn Shoppe:

The Escape Hatch once stood on Harvey Road in St. John’s, Newfoundland in the 1980s. In addition to selling the “Adult Magazines, Exotic Lingerie, and Adult Novelties” advertised on their signage, the Hatch also sold comics, album bootlegs and punk records. Da Slyme’s notorious double LP was originally distributed at The Escape Hatch for $6.66. Despite the lore, this is the only photographic evidence we could find of the smut shop that once sat opposite the CLB Armoury. We pulled this photo from an archived photography project called Streetscapes via Memorial University circa 1984.

  1. Bridge Dale says:

This is one of the oldest such shops in the country as there were so many people outside it in the prime days. I think the government should do something to revive it like the old days.
