To Toronto and Beyond: The Story of TWRP
TWRP (Tupper Ware Remix Party) is a band of intergalactic rock n’ rollers that are taking earth’s music scene by storm. Featuring crazy costumes and upbeat dance beats with 80’s metal undertones, TWRP brings the funk whenever they play. I recently had the pleasure of chatting with Tupper Ware’s own Doctor Sung to get the scoop on TWRP‘s latest ventures.
“TWRP started when myself, doc sung, in an alternate dimension assembled an elite force of rock stars and we embarked on a tour through time and space. which brought us to Halifax where we were based for about 5 years or so.”
TWRP landed as a 3 piece almost a decade ago in Halifax Nova Scotia. The band is now comprised of four permanent members including Doc Sung (synth & talk box), Havve Hogan (drums), Lord Phobos (guitar) and Commander Meouch (bass).
“We all love that town. its like a really awesome place and we know a lot of really awesome people from there. Its great. It’s small enough that you can create your own thing there but its big enough that it can be like a springboard into other things and that’s sort of what happened with us.”
After spending several years on the East Coast and generating a large and loyal fan base, TWRP knew they needed to spread the funk and headed off for Toronto where they’ve successfully spent the last 3 years.
“Toronto’s awesome. It’s been wicked for us. We’ve certainly grown a lot and it feels like another home to us now. It made sense when we were moving to expand outside of Halifax, but Toronto has almost eclipsed the insanity from some of our Halifax shows. We didn’t really expect that sort of reaction in Toronto as well, and its sort of grown to that point where people are throwing down. Flowing from a mosh pit into a crazy ass dance party within the same song.”
New fans aren’t the only good thing that came out of the band’s move to Toronto. Earlier this year, TWRP decided to try something a little different and released a new EP 2-Nite.
“We sort of had a different approach to recording this EP from previous things that we’ve done. This one was sort of a collaborative effort across all members of the band. Before, we’d have like a primary producer, who pretty much recorded all the parts and did it all themselves. But this one it was a lot more hands on for all of us. So we each individually recorded our own parts and we had sort of a mentality where we just wanted to create so much content within each song and then sift through what was good and what was not.”
Keeping with the collaborative mindset, 2-Nite features other artists, Scratch Bastid and Ninja Sex Party, for the first time in TWRP‘s history.
“It was one of our goals with the EP, to branch out and involve others outside of the band because that’s something we haven’t done before and we were really happy with how it turned out.”
“Scratch Bastid, from the east coast originally, rips a pretty ferocious scratch solo on ICQ. The other guys we worked with, The Ninja Sex Party. They’re like an internet musical comedy duo kind of thing. We were really fucking excited about that collaboration”.
Taking a page from greats like Peter Frampton and Roger Troutman, 2-Nite also features Doctor Sung on the Talk Box for the very first time.
“It was the first time recording with talk box which is sort of the synthesized vocals you hear on the album. For me that was the highlight of my recording experience was digging into that. I didn’t create the idea, but greats like Roger Troutman are so ridiculously funky in the application of the talk box and that’s what I was sort of trying to go for; to evoke the same sort of funk that he was known for. But that was really fun for me because it just sort of sounds like a funky-ass robot.”
To accompany their newest EP, TWRP soon after released their first ever music video; a video game inspired, 8-bit masterpiece to the “The Hit” featuring Ninja Sex Party. Besides being genuinly entertaining, what makes the video so impressive is that it was entirely animated by Tupper ware’s drummer Havve Hogan.
“You might say its a bit late coming to have our first music video, but its definitely going to be the first of many. Its quite a process, and actually our drummer Havve Hogan who is also known as Lazerhorse online, actually [animated] the video himself which is a stupid amount of work (laughs) and that’s why the release wasn’t done at the same time as the EP.”
For the release of 2Nite, a revamped TWRP returned to the Maritimes in the April for their official EP release tour. They shortly after took their first dart to Western Canada in June.
“The tour was a huge success in a small amount of time. 4 sold-out shows in 4 days spread across the Maritimes, and an extra date added in Halifax by popular demand. The energy and production that was brought every night was unprecedented, with a synced light show, brand-spankin’ new costumes, and new jokes, moves and music. Not to mention the official release tour of our new 2Nite EP!”
If you’re one of our many readers living in Newfoundland, don’t despair. They haven’t been trying to avoid us all these years.
“Unfortunately the stars have not aligned and we have not been able to make it out to Newfoundland. We’ve wanted to. We still want to obviously. We have a lot of gear that we have to take with us. Its costly (Laughs) but we know we will eventually. Just need to keep spreading the word on the rock. Soon it will make more sense for us.”
Now that 2-Nite is released and the tours wrapping up, Tupper Ware Remix Party shows no signs of slowing down. With talks of another new EP (now set for September), they’ve got big plans for the near future and even bigger plans for the distant future.
“Given that we are immortal beings we’ll probably stay on earth for a while because the human life span is a blink of an eye to us, so we feel like there’s still a lot of work that we can be doing here. In the next year or so we’re going to be a lot more touring to a lot of new places for us which is exciting for us, cause we are essentially a live band. The strongest part of our package, we think, is our live show. So that’s going to be a big thing for us, just going to new cities and towns and try to spread the live show as much as we possibly can. Out west [happened] in June, and we have some plans to do some US stuff. Of course all of these plans are line with our plan for global domination. We just want to make the world a fun and happier place and we’re going to do that the only way we know how, and that’s by bringing the funk.”
With TWRP‘s plans fully in motion, you can be sure to expect new tunes, tour dates and genuine entertainment from this group of rag tag rockers.
UPDATE: Since this article was written, TWRP has announced the release of another new EP, Believe it in your Dreams which is scheduled to be released September 12th.
